What are dental implants and how do they work?
Dental implants are long-term, permanent replacements for lost teeth, that we surgically place directly into your jawbone.
A single implant is a titanium screw that fuses to the bone of your jaw, to which we attach an abutment that connects the implant to the crown (replacement tooth). Crowns are designed by our dentist and sculpted in our dental lab. They look, feel and function just like real teeth and blend in perfectly with your healthy neighbouring teeth.
What are the benefits for me?
Dental implants are a simple, effective and minimally-invasive way to restore your natural smile and your confidence.
- Provide stability and comfort
- Improve oral hygiene; better fitting than bridges and easier to clean
- Durable and long lasting
- No adjustment required once placed
- No need to remove at night for cleaning
- Help keep the jawbone and gum healthy and reduce further bone loss
- With proper care dental implants can last a lifetime
What does the procedure involve?
With over 20 years’ experience placing implants and over a thousand cases with an exceptional success rate, our highly experienced team will achieve the best results for you while keeping you fully informed, comfortable and relaxed throughout the entire process.
Initial consultation
We start with a FREE, no-obligation, initial consultation at the practice to talk through with you what’s involved, the implications and the benefits in more detail.
Examination
We always carry out a detailed oral examination with x-rays and sometimes an impression of your current teeth and jawbone. This enables us to properly plan the position of the implants and the location, size and shape of the crowns.
Simple surgical procedure
We place the implants into the jawbone using local anaesthetic or light sedation. The implant is then given three to six months to fully bond to the bone. This ensures a strong foundation for the replacement teeth.
As part of the All-on-4 procedure, a temporary bridge will be used to maintain oral function (chewing) and cosmetic appearance.
New, natural-looking replacement teeth
Our award-winning dental technician will create your perfectly natural looking replacement teeth, which we then attach to the implant(s) in your jaw.
How long does it take?
As little as six weeks
In our experience, treatment times can vary from as little as six weeks to as much as six months.
This time will be less where patients have high-quality, high-density bone available. It may extend further where their bone quality and density is poorer due to the extra care and attention required.
After the dental implants are placed, a healing period is required while they form a strong bond with the bone in your jaw.
Final replacement teeth
Up to six months after the dental implants are placed, the final teeth are fitted. The dental implant treatment then continues with regular examination and hygiene appointments. After the first few months, once we are happy your treatment is going to plan, this will be no different to when you had natural teeth.
Once the dentist is satisfied the dental implants have healed successfully, it may be necessary to first fit replicas, rather than the final teeth to help give your gums more time to mature around the implants. For patients receiving the All-on-4 procedure, it may be necessary to first fit a temporary bridge rather than the final teeth.
Teeth in a day
The revolutionary All-on-4 procedure enables Arnica to place dental implants that provide new, super-realistic teeth, ready for immediate use… in a single day. We call this Teeth in a Day, sometimes known as Same Day Teeth.
You’re in control every step of the way
We’ll keep you fully informed, comfortable and relaxed throughout the whole procedure by:
- Discussing what final outcome you want to achieve and the best way of achieving it
- Fully explaining how dental implants work, the implications and benefits, so that you can make informed decisions
- Fully explaining what happens when and what to expect throughout the procedure
- Managing your levels of comfort and anxiety using a combination of gentle dentistry and sedation.
If you have any questions then please don’t hesitate to ask.
